Back to School

Back to School (2).png

As parents who want the best for our children, we spend a lot of thought, money and time in August on back packs, pencil cases, new clothes, lunch bags and other supplies in an effort to feel prepared.

But did you ever stop and think about how you can start to prepare your child’s body and mind for school?

Our kids go from relaxed days at camp or at home to more structured routines, new schedules, new friends, and new teachers all at once.  This can be very daunting for many, especially the younger ones!  Change is not easy for adults...imagine how it might feel as a kid!  Gosh…and with the last couple of years…there is an additional layer of anxiety topped right onto ‘the usual’ stressors.

I recommend the following essential oils to assist your child in settling into their new school environment with ease.

Courage & Energy

#1 - Brave Roller (Wild Orange, Amyris, Osmanthus, and Cinnamon Bark, diluted)

This is a fantastic blend to help you and your kids feel more confident and in control. Swipe on the bottom of your kids feet and then pack it into their bag to go.

Encourage your kids to inhale this blend deeply when they feel worried or out of control..  Use this for trips to the dentist, before doing presentations or for any transition.

Immunity & Viral Support

#2 - On Guard Essential Oil

This blend has been shown to build immunity as it kills 99.9 % of germs.  We have had the healthiest winters since using this blend consistently.  I use this to clean everything from floors to door knobs to counters.  I also have this diluted in a roller bottle so the kids can roll it on to the bottom of their feet every morning. (twice a day In flu season) I also diffuse it during flu season and in the kids bedrooms if they are sick.  Have a look at this interesting study that shows just how effective this blend is.  How does it work?  Did you know that cloves are are significantly higher on the ORAC scale (measures anti-oxidant ability of a food) than blueberries?!

Focus and Thinking

#3 - Thinker Blend (In Tune Blend)

The focus blend contains oils that have been studied and used traditionally for their abilities to promote calmness, focus and a balanced state of mind. Many of these oils contain high levels of sesquiterpenes, which have been proven to cross the blood-brain barrier. This blend will help ease stress and improve concentration.  This oil comes in a roller bottle. I apply this to the bottom of my kids feet and sometimes on the back of their necks in that little soft patch just under the skull.  If the don't like the smell (some don't) you can roll this on the bottom of their feet before they wake up.  For children that have a difficult time focusing in the daytime can take a bottle to school, they can sneak into the bathroom and apply themselves.  This is also one of my favourites for my mid afternoon pick me up!

Energy, Focus and Mood

#4 - Lemon Essential Oil

Lemon is known as “The Oil of Focus“. It has a citrusy aroma that is uplifting and cleansing at the same time.  It helps with concentration. Lemon is a wonderful aid for children who are struggling with school. It is especially helpful in cases of learning disabilities. It goes well with Rosemary.  You can put both in a roller bottle and apply to the back of the neck or diffuse this powerful blend before school.  You can use lemon in place of the wild orange.  Or Kids Line: Thinker

Calming and Sleep

#5 - Serenity Essential Oil Blend

Children who are hyperactive, anxious or have difficulty concentrating could really benefit from this blend. It contains essential oils that are often used to calm and soothe feelings of stress and excitement. It’s fantastic for promoting sleep when kids are wound up so that they can settle down for a restful sleep.  Both of my boys have a roller bottle of lavender in their rooms so that they get a 'roll' down their spines...it's all part of our calming down routine.  By the way, they now ask for it! Sometimes I'll drop some into the bath or diffuse it right before bedtime in the family room.  In the morning on days that might seem stressful (first day or presenting a project), I roll it onto the bottom of their feet.

Natural Antibiotic

#6 - Oregano Roller

When someone gets stick in our home, Oregano is our tool! High Quality and potent oregano oil can be an effective anti-viral and anti-bacterial treatment. There are many studies that demonstrate it’s efficacy and it’s been used for centuries…even by the father of medicine, Hippocrates. At first sign of illness, roll on the bottoms of feet where pores are larger for support. Essential oils can permeate cell membranes and are therefore more effective than antibiotics when it comes to viral infections. Repeat every few hours while sick and then a few days after. This is NOT a daily use oil because of it’s phenol content.

CAN

US

In 2022, with some new products out, I’ve curated another option for you.

I like this kit because:

  • it provides smaller bottles (5 ml with 85 drops in each) of some favourite oils to keep costs down and allow you to try first and see what you like and use

  • includes tea tree (melaleuca) that you can use for lice prevention [study]. Simply add to your kid’s favourite clean shampoo or DoTerra’s shampoo.

  • includes lavender to use for anything calming (skin, nervous system) - this is in the serenity blend but sometimes I just love the pure oil so that I can blend it based on needs.

  • includes easy air (breathe) which is the oil that made me love doTerra. This blend includes peppermint and eucalyptus, which studies have shown increase oxygen saturation. In fact, one of the molecules in peppermint is oxygen. Eucalyptus oil contains eucalyptol and alpha-terpineol, which make it an ideal oil to promote open airways and feelings of clear breathing. Eucalyptus isn’t just helpful for your breathing, the oil has purifying properties and helps lessen tension. I think we can all agree that at times like these those are definitely essential qualities. [study] [study]

  • it includes some ‘on guard’ favourites that make life easier and cleaner (On Guard Wipes and On Guard Sanitizing Mist)

  • you’ll have the fractionated coconut oil ready for making your own blends or diluting your single oils. Remember…do Terra’s oils and pure and potent!

  • it includes peppermint! You may or may not know how supportive peppermint is to digestion…and how connected digestion is to stress. Keep your tummy tame and energy up with this incredible oil. I love to press a drop to the roof of my mouth for an instant brain lift.
