Grain Free PB & Pumpkin Dog Treats

Lucy came into our world in April 2019…about a year before our world turned upside down. It’s almost like it all happened at just the right time because I’m not sure we would have survived our global pandemic lockdowns as well as we did without her. I truly believe our dogs are like furry ‘zen gardens’ who offer unconditional love non stop. Lucy is a rescue from St Lucia and I just stumbled across the Bruno Project’s Facebook page after about a year of looking for the perfect dog for our family. And then everything fell into place.

So just like having babies…you dive into research to ensure you are making all the right choices for your new family member…especially decisions around food. It’s been very interesting for sure. Quick story. We started her on a very clean diet but the Vet encouraged us to try the ‘vet approved science diet’ food after questioning our choice. Like any new mom who was unsure despite everything I knew about nutrition, I was hesitant but thought I would give it a go. I really started off with zero knowledge of raising a dog! Anyway, we started her on the food on a Sunday, and then I went away for work for the week and came home Friday to a ‘fat and depressed’ dog. She quite literally expanded around her middle and seemed lethargic and unhappy. Like any good holistic nutritionist, you look at diet. We switched her back to her former diet and then incorporated raw food and sure enough…the vibrant and energetic Lucy was back.

So with this, I’m sharing a clean and healthy cookie idea that will keep your dog loving life.

Ingredients:

  • 1 1/2 cup coconut oil

  • 1/2 cup peanut butter (unsweetened)

  • 1/2 cup coconut oil

  • 3 eggs

  • 1 cup pumpkin puree (not pumpkin pie mix)

Optional:

Add your Do Terra Essential Oils for great health.

  • Add 2 drops Turmeric for an anti-inflammatory powerhouse and immunity

  • Cinnamon for healthy weight and to add flavour

  • Frankincense for pain and overall health

Directions:

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

  • Combine all ingredients in a large mixing bowl.

  • Fancy version: Roll dough out gently onto a cutting board dusted lightly with additional coconut flour. Roll out to about ¼ - ½ inch thick.

  • Cut out shapes using your preferred cookie cutters. Here are some cute ones.

  • Transfer gently to a parchment lined baking sheet.

  • *Busy mom version: Roll into balls and press down. (not as pretty but serves a function)

  • Bake for 13-15 minutes. Treats should have a slightly golden color around the edges.

  • Cool on cookie sheets before serving.

  • May be stored in airtight containers for up to three weeks.
